A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
