In the early hours of Saturday, accounts surfaced of major blasts rocking Tehran, following statements from Israel that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Events
This event occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Key developments leading up to this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials dismissed claims about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation is fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
